A dental emergency is a situation in which a patient needs immediate treatment. Normally, a broken or knocked out tooth is disregarded as a dental emergency.

In activities such as contact sports, a dental emergency is fairly common among patients. Other times, severe tooth discomfort may be an instance where emergency dental services are needed. If the discomfort is bothersome enough to lose sleep over, you should contact your emergency dentist to find out how to solve the problem.

If this problem is ignored and not taken care of immediately, there may be more consequences than wanted. Some symptoms of a serious dental emergency include:

  • Flow of blood from an isolated area in the mouth

  • Tooth discoloration

  • Pus from infection

  • Trouble breathing

If you believe you may have a dental emergency, don’t hesitate and call us at Lakewood Emergency Dentist at 281-320-6400, or come in right away.

If you are suffering from severe pain, bleeding, or the fear you may have a broken, chipped, or cracked tooth, don’t hesitate to visit us immediately. Severe pain is an obvious sign of injury or infection and is a clear indication that your mouth is injured, infected, or has a broken or abscessed tooth. Once you make it to the dentist, your dentist will suggest dental measures that must be done to take care of the problem.

If your mouth is still bleeding or in pain after applying a cold compress to the area, see your emergency dentist right away. Continual bleeding may cause illness and pain in children and young adults. It also indicates there is a deeper abrasion or more complex injury.

Fracturing a tooth or even knocking one out may be a common occurrence while playing sports, so be sure to protect your mouth with a mouth guard while doing these activities. If you do happen to have a mouth accident, don’t hesitate to contact or go to your emergency dentist. Most tooth accidents are not serious and can be repaired, however if you are in pain, don’t wait. The injury to your tooth may be deep and may be affecting the dentin or pulp within the tooth.

Dead pulp tissue decays quickly and can lead to serious abscessed and infection. If the nerve center in the tooth is not protected, it may cause you to need a very costly root canal in the future.

Importantly, if you have knocked out a tooth, it is imperative to avoid poking or pushing the intact surrounding teeth. This is important because you may cause damage to the surrounding teeth that may be loose or cracked, but not dislodged. Clean your tooth with water gently, and tuck the dislodged tooth between your cheek and gum, being careful not to swallow it. If you cannot do so, place the tooth in a container of milk and go to your emergency dentist.

Important note: NEVER brush the dislodged tooth because you may harm the living roots or connective tissues. A dislodged tooth has a probable chance of being situated back into its original position in the gums if you can make it to the dentist within thirty minutes, but if more time has elapsed, don’t hesitate to visit us.
